Dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions affecting both dogs and cats. Because pets hide oral pain well, dental
problems often progress silently. Professional dental care protects not only your pet’s mouth, but their overall health.

What Is Included in a Professional Dental Procedure?
- Full oral examination performed while your pet is under anesthesia
- Ultrasonic scaling above and below the gumline to remove plaque and tartar
- Hand scaling for detailed cleaning
- Polishing of the teeth to smooth enamel and slow future plaque buildup
- IV fluids and continuous anesthetic monitoring to support circulation, blood pressure, and safety
Dental Radiographs (X-rays)
Cats: Dental radiographs are required due to the most common feline dental disease—tooth resorption—which occurs below the
gumline and cannot be seen on visual exam.
Dogs: Dental radiographs are strongly recommended to evaluate roots and bone below the gumline. If radiographs are declined for financial reasons, the evaluation below the gumline is more limited.
How Often Are Dental Procedures Needed?
For most pets, professional dental procedures performed yearly to every other year greatly help preserve teeth throughout a pet’s lifetime. Regular dental care reduces the need for extraction, decreases chronic pain, and helps maintain overall health as pets age.
Why Dental Health Matters
Dental disease causes chronic pain and infection. Oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream and negatively impact the heart, liver, and kidneys if untreated.
